Virginia, Trout, Musky and Smallmouth Report

Water temperatures are starting to rise, and fishing conditions are improving across the region. The trout fishing is outstanding right now and should remain strong over the next couple of months. This is one of the best times of year for anglers who love dry fly fishing, as increasing insect activity is creating excellent opportunities for consistent surface action.

Musky fishing is also heating up. The fish appear to be waiting for the full moon of April to spawn, which means there is still time to get in those famous “10,000 casts” before the spawn begins. On our most recent outing, we moved four fish and landed one, a great sign that musky activity is picking up.

The smallmouth bass bite has been a little hit or miss, but larger fish are definitely starting to wake up and feed more aggressively. As water temperatures continue to climb, the smallmouth action should improve quickly. Prime smallmouth fishing is just around the corner.
