Andros Island Bonefish Club

Andros Island, Bahamas

Andros Island is widely regarded as the world’s top destination for sight-fishing bonefish, and Andros Island Bonefish Club (AIBC) puts anglers right in the heart of the action. Located just a one-hour flight from Miami, Andros is the largest and least populated island in the Bahamas, renowned for its vast, unpressured flats and crystal-clear water—ideal for both wading and skiff fishing.

Guests at Andros Island Bonefish Club enjoy immediate access to legendary bonefish flats, with productive waters located just 100 yards from the lodge. Tailing bonefish are a common sight, and anglers can fish year-round for bonefish averaging 3–5 pounds, with regular shots at trophy fish exceeding 10 pounds.

Beyond world-class bonefishing, AIBC also offers opportunities to target permit, tarpon, barracuda, jacks, and snapper, making it one of the premier saltwater fly-fishing lodges in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

  • The guides at Andros Island Bonefish Club are among the most experienced bonefishing guides in the Bahamas. Founded by legendary flats expert Captain Rupert Leadon, the program continues today under Shawn Leadon and a highly skilled local guiding team.

Most guides are native to Andros and have been flats fishing since a young age, giving them unmatched knowledge of tides, currents, and productive bonefish flats. Whether you’re new to saltwater fly fishing or an experienced angler, guides tailor each day to your skill level, providing casting instruction, presentation tips, and efficient skiff or wade access to maximize your time on the flats.

  • Although Andros Island Bonefish Club is best known for world-class fly fishing, spin fishing is also available. The lodge offers spin rod and fly rod rentals, allowing anglers to travel light without bringing every fishing setup.

  • Bonefish – The primary target species, with healthy populations averaging 3–5 pounds and regular opportunities to catch trophy bonefish over 10 pounds.

    Secondary & Opportunistic Species
Anglers may also encounter a variety of flats species, including permit, tarpon (found in deeper creeks and west-side waters), barracuda, jacks, and snapper. Small to mid-sized sharks are an occasional bonus catch while fishing the flats.

  • Guests enjoy air-conditioned, spacious rooms with private bathrooms and stunning Atlantic Ocean views. Each room features refrigerators, ceiling fans, ample storage, and plenty of space for fishing gear and luggage. Many rooms can comfortably accommodate up to three guests

  • Fly Rods

    • Bonefish: 8–9 wt fly rods (9′ travel rods recommended) — perfect for casting in wind and controlling fast, hard-charging bonefish on the flats.

    • Permit: 9–10 wt fly rods are ideal when targeting permit in deeper or more challenging flats.

    • Tarpon: 10–12 wt fly rods handle larger tarpon and heavier conditions with ease.

Lines & Leaders: Use weight-forward, floating saltwater fly lines matched to rod weight, with 9–12 ft leaders and 12–20 lb fluorocarbon, heavier for permit or tarpon.

    Spin Rods

    • Bonefish & Flats Species: Light to medium spinning outfits (6–7 ft) with smooth drags and 10–20 lb test line work well for bonefish, jacks, and barracuda.

    • Larger Predators: For tarpon or big barracuda, add a wire leader and heavier line for reliable hooksets and fish control.

  •  A maximum 24 guests total.

  • Andros Island Bonefish Club uses 16–18 ft Dolphin Super Skiffs equipped with elevated poling platforms, giving guides and anglers superior visibility and control when stalking bonefish on the flats.

These skiffs are fast, stable, and spacious, making them ideal for sight fishing and spotting cruising fish from a distance. Most are powered by 90–140 HP Yamaha outboard motors, ensuring reliable performance and quick access to the island’s most productive fishing waters.

  • Step-by-Step Travel to Andros Island Bonefish Club

    1. Fly to Nassau, Bahamas
Most guests begin their journey by flying into Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS) in Nassau, the primary international gateway to the Bahamas. Nassau is easily accessible with frequent direct flights from major cities in the United States, Canada, and Europe.

    2. Domestic Flight to Andros Island
From Nassau, travelers connect via a short 15–30 minute domestic flight to Andros Town or Fresh Creek Airport on Andros Island. These flights are operated by local Bahamian airlines such as LeAir or private charter services.
