Rods:
8‑weight or 9‑weight single-hand rods are standard for golden dorado fishing on the Tsimane rivers. Many anglers bring two rods, one rigged with a floating line and another with a clear-tip or intermediate line for different conditions.
An 8‑weight rod works well for most situations, while a 9‑weight is ideal for casting large streamers and handling big fish in stronger currents.
Bringing extra rods or spares is recommended to adapt to changing conditions or avoid downtime if a rod breaks.
Reels:
Use high-quality, large-arbor saltwater-style reels with smooth, strong drag systems to handle the explosive runs of dorado and other jungle species.
Reels should carry ample backing (30‑lb typical) to accommodate long runs from trophy fish.
Lines & Leaders:
Weight-forward floating lines are recommended for most surface and near-surface fishing, while clear-tip or intermediate lines are useful for deeper pools or fast currents.
Pair heavy fluorocarbon leaders (40 lb) with wire bite tippet (40 lb) to protect against sharp teeth and powerful jaws of dorado and other jungle predators.
-
For the standard lodge-based program, Pluma Lodge offers 6 single-occupancy rooms, accommodating up to 6 anglers per week.
When combining the heli-fishing program with expanded accommodations, the lodge can host up to 8 anglers in single rooms.
This intimate guest capacity ensures personalized service, high guide-to-angler ratios, and an exclusive fly-fishing experience on the pristine Pluma, Secure, and Itirizama Rivers deep in the Bolivian jungle.

Pluma & Itirizama Rivers
The Pluma River is a crystal-clear freestone river with wide, gravel-lined banks ideal for wade fishing. Its Upper Sector features shallow runs, riffles, and well-defined pools, holding abundant golden dorado, pacu, yatorana, and catfish (surubí). The Lower Pluma offers deeper, faster pools with more aerial action from trophy dorado, sand flats for sight casting, and marshy shorelines.
The Itirizama River, Tsimane’s crown jewel, flows through rugged canyons with steep gradients and deep, clear pools. Fishing here is technical but rewarding, offering fewer dorado by number but larger average sizes, along with trophy pacu using fruit imitations, streamers, and big dry flies.
These rivers provide a diverse fly-fishing experience, from easy wading on the Pluma to physically challenging, trophy-focused fishing on the Itirizama, making Tsimane one of South America’s premier golden dorado destinations.
