Known globally as Jurassic Lake, Lago Strobel is celebrated for its crystal-clear waters and extraordinary trout density. Here, fly fishermen routinely land rainbow trout averaging over 10 pounds, with 20-pound giants caught every season. The unique nutrient-rich ecosystem of the Barrancoso River fuels explosive growth, making this destination a bucket-list location for serious anglers pursuing trophy-size rainbow trout.
Surrounded by the stark beauty of Argentine Patagonia, Jurassic Lake Lodge combines remote wilderness, expert guides, and exclusive access to prime waters—creating the ultimate fly-fishing experience for anglers seeking adventure, solitude, and the thrill of battling true giants.

Primary Rod: 7–8 Weight (Fast Action)
The most versatile choice for Jurassic Lake.
Handles heavy Patagonian winds.
Strong enough to fight 10–20 lb rainbow trout.
Ideal for long casts with large streamers or weighted nymph rigs.
Secondary Rod Options
6-weight: Fun on calmer days or in protected river sections.
9-weight: Helpful in extreme wind or when throwing large, heavy streamers all day.
Most anglers bring two rods rigged at once (e.g., streamer setup + nymph rig) to adapt quickly.
Fly Lines
Floating Line (Most Important)
Essential for fishing the lake shoreline and indicator nymphing.
Pairs well with long leaders.
Sink-Tip Line (Type III–VI)
Crucial for streamer fishing when trout are chasing baitfish.
Helps get flies down quickly in windy conditions.
Intermediate Line
Useful on calmer days when fish cruise just below the surface.
Proven Fly Patterns
Jurassic Lake trout are aggressive and opportunistic. These patterns consistently produce:
Streamers
Woolly Buggers (black, olive)
Baitfish imitations
Leech patterns
Zonkers
Nymphs
Large Stonefly nymphs
San Juan Worms
Prince Nymphs
Weighted attractor patterns
Dry Flies (Less Common but Possible)
Large attractors
Beetle patterns
Occasional midge or mayfly matches in calmer conditions
Leader & Tippet Setup
9–12 ft leaders
0X–2X fluorocarbon tippet (these fish are strong and not leader shy)
Heavier tippet is common due to wind and fish size
Wading Gear
Studded wading boots (rocky shoreline)
Wading staff (wind can be intense)
Layered clothing — weather can change quickly
Buff, sunglasses, and strong sun protection
Why Heavier Gear Matters
Rainbow trout here average over 10 pounds, and 20-pound fish are realistic. Combined with Patagonia’s relentless wind, lighter trout setups can quickly feel underpowered.
-
The lodge typically accommodates 10–12 anglers per week.
This limited number ensures low guide-to-angler ratios (usually 1 guide per 2 anglers), maximizing both instruction and access to prime fishing water.
The small group size also maintains solitude on the lake and river, preserves the quality of the trophy rainbow trout fishery, and allows for rotations across the most productive beats without crowding.
This exclusivity is one reason Jurassic Lake is considered a world-class trophy rainbow trout destination.
-
Shore-Based Fishing Only: All angling is done while wading in the water or standing on the riverbank.
No Boats Used: The fishery does not employ boats, offering a pure, hands-on fly-fishing experience in the lake and river.
